THERE’S a new addition to one of Newport’s parks thanks to a city wood worker.
Self-taught wood carver Chris Wood, 44, created a sculpture from a fallen tree in Belle Vue Park.
Mr Wood, who is also a freelance artist, has been in the business for 15 years and runs his own company Wood Art Works.
He was commissioned by the council along with The Friends of Newport Ornamental Park to create a wooden seat adorned with carvings of wood spirits.
He said: “It is predominantly a seat and I thought I could get some wood spirits on it, but when I carve the type of wood dictates what I can get out of it, so with this one I just went with the flow.”
Mr Wood started the carving on April 2 and spent two days working on it.
