A TORFAEN school is celebrating after receiving a good Estyn inspection report.

George Street Primary School in Pontypool underwent an inspection in February and has been evaluated as ‘good’ overall, meaning it has many strengths and no important areas requiring significant improvement.

Head teacher Julie Wood said: “George Street is a wonderful school that has a strong staff team, hardworking governing body, supportive parents and families and most importantly, amazing children. The report reflects the huge effort that goes into school by all of these groups.”

The report states the current performance of the school is good because most of its 328 pupils progress well on entry and pupils’ speaking and listening skills are good.

The report highlights the prospects for improvement of the school are good because the head teacher provides strong direction to the life and work of the school; staff undertake their management roles consistently well; the school links well with other schools and partners, and there is a good level of teamwork in all parts of the school.

Ms Wood added: “We will continue to build on the many strengths that the report has highlighted and look forward to continuing high standards in the future.”

There are recommendations made within the report which include improving the quality of pupils’ writing in key stage two, developing pupils’ confidence in using spoken Welsh in key stage two, improving attendance further and improving the robustness of teachers’ assessment of writing in key stage two.

An action plan will be drawn up to show how it will address the recommendations.
