CALDICOT tot Imogen Ashwell-Lewis waved off tractors and Landrovers at a 32-mile road run fundraising event being held for her.

The event was among a number of activities being held to raise funds to help pay for a pioneering operation to enable the two-year-old, who suffers from the debilitating nerve-muscle condition known as spastic diplegic cerebral palsy, to walk independently.

The youngster saw off 27 tractors and two Landrovers which took part in the road run at St Arvan’s, near Chepstow on Sunday.

The event was organised by The Chepstow and District Vintage Club after members read about Imogen’s plight.

The club's president said the amount raised is not yet known but said it was a well-attended and successful event.

Imogen’s family needs to raise £40,000 so that she can have a radical procedure not available on the NHS, called selective dorsal rhizotomy, which will help avoid further deterioration.

Her mum, Catherine Ashwell-Rice, 36, of Lapwing Avenue, launched the appeal, which is backed by the Argus' sister paper the Free Press, over two months ago through the Tree of Hope charity.

She said: “We are now just over £12,000 on our just giving page and still have money to collect."

Cheques should be made payable to ‘Tree of Hope’.
