FUNDRAISING for a Talywain mum continues after £6,000 has already been raised in two weeks towards a life changing operation.

A fundraising event was held on Sunday for Lindsay Clarke, 33, who has been completely bed-bound since December.

This raised £400.

But since Mrs Clarke began collecting funds two weeks ago, a total of £6,000 has been raised on her fundraising page.

The Argus reported how Mrs Clarke has become trapped in her own body as she has lived with a rare autoimmune disease called Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) since June 7, 2009.

She now aims to raise £300,000 for a stem cell transplant.

The latest fundraising event was held at Talywain RFC, where people enjoyed a barbecue, Easter bonnet parade, prize bingo, a quiz, raffle, disco, and games.

Organiser Lisa Busi said: “Despite the weather, the fundraiser still went ahead.I would like to thank the staff and committee at Talywain rugby club for all their help on the day and all the people that donated prizes.

“And a massive thank you to everyone that attended because if it wasn't for them we couldn't have done it, this is how it should be - the community pulling together to help.”

Prizes were donated by Mecca bingo in Cwmbran, Harvester in Pontypool, Pizza Pronto, The Hair Cellar, Rachel’s Barbers, Broad Street Motors, Castle bingo in Newport, Isca Meats, Beauty 4 U, Wayne's butchers, Phil's Pantry, DE meats, Petals and Jinxie Jinx tattoo.

Mrs Clarke suffers regular and aggressive seizures and cramps, that can last for hours at a time, during which her respiratory system shuts down.

She has an oxygen mask and canister constantly by her bed to help her breathe during such episodes.

The condition has forced her husband, Jason, to give up work to become her full time carer as well as looking after the couple’s three children Olivia-Beth, 12, Mollie-Jai, seven, and Dylan, four.

Speaking of her fundraising effort, Mrs Clarke added: “I hope I can also raise awareness of how debilitating, dangerous and life threatening this horrendous illness is.

“This is my attempt, out of sheer desperation, to somehow get my voice heard, before it is too late.”

She has set up a blog, which has drawn support from across the world, to document her deterioration.
