WORK to dual a section of the Heads of the Valley road between Brynmawr and Tredegar is progressing.

Finance minster, Jane Hutt visited the site offices at section three of the scheme to dual the A465 on Tuesday before later announcing the Welsh government secured £300million in funding towards the scheme between Dowlais and Hirwaun, as part of a one billion pound investment in infrastructure.

Section three is the next phase of the scheme. Work began in late 2012 and is due to be completed by construction firm Carillion next year.

The scheme, is expected to reduce congestion, improve visibility and the lack of overtaking opportunities as well as alleviating accident hotspots on the A465.

The major project, which comprises of six sections between Abergavenny and Hirwaun is expected to be completed by 2020.

Mrs Hutt said: “Investing in our infrastructure to create jobs and boost economic growth is my number one priority.

“The £1billion infrastructure investment that I have announced today represents a vital injection of investment at a time when the economy and our health services most need it. It reflects this Welsh Government’s desire to use the full range of its resources to boost investment.

We are providing a reasoned, affordable and desirable alternative to the austerity measures that would choke off investment had we not acted decisively.”
