AN UNEMPLOYED Newport dad who walked 16 miles just to hand over his CV last week has said he’ll do any job he is offered.

William Bennett, 34, has been looking for work and signing on for Jobseeker’s Allowance for the last eight months after his wife Michelle unexpectedly fell pregnant.

Mr Bennett, who lives in Llanmartin with his wife and their five children Liam, aged two weeks, Samantha, five, Shania, 11, Cameron, 12, and John Jones, 14, had planned to be a stay-at-home dad while his wife went out to work, after his hours working as a forklift truck driver were cut so much the family found it difficult to survive.

But plans changed when Mrs Bennett fell pregnant with baby Liam, he said, and since then he has been scouring employment applications on his phone and looking for work with the help of the organisation A4E.

Last Wednesday he walked eight miles to Caldicot and back just to hand over his CV to a potential employer who had been advertising a top-mounted lifting job.

“I want to get myself a job,” said Mr Bennett, who contacted the Argus to tell his story. “We are struggling and I don’t know where to turn.

“I believe that handing over a CV in person to a manager shows you’re willing to get up and show some initiative,” he said.

“I couldn’t find a direct contact number for the company in Caldicot so I took a folder and a CV down there.

“I’ve been working since I was 16 until my wife and I made the decision to swap roles, but now I will accept anything, as long as it’s support for my family I don’t care what’s in front of me.”

The family has been struggling to pay for things for their new baby Liam. “I’ve always worked in warehouses or as a driver, I enjoy driving and have a clean driving licence,” he said. “I need to get back to work, I’ve got a family to support.”
