AROUND 50 people turned out for the third annual fancy dress walk in memory of a Newport lifeguard in aid of St David’s Hospice.

Steven Lewis, 31, died on December 21, 2011, after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.

The fancy dress walk from Charles Street to The Ship Inn, Caerleon, took place yesterday on Bank Holiday Monday where the recent bad weather luckily held off.

The last two years have seen dozens of people turn out for the walk in their best fancy dress, from the Queen and Rocky to a Dad’s Army soldier and the Mario Bros.

This year outfits included a hippy, a pirate and a gorilla and there were prizes for the best fancy dress in the male, female and children’s categories.

The three-mile walk started at the bottom of Charles Street and made its way through Commericial Street, into Bridge Street and Cambrian Road, through the High Street, across Newport Bridge and along Caerleon Road to the Ship car park.

Steven’s mum Jackie Lewis, from St Julian’s, told the Argus they are hopeful the walk has helped them reach their £25,000 target.

Before their round the world bike ride for cancer research Ryan Farley and Rob Shipley started the walk and lapped walkers before they arrived at the Ship.

Mrs Lewis said: “It went really well and I would be surprised if we hadn’t reached our target, which is an amazing thought. Everyone has had such a fun time and people have been so generous, it’s been a real success.”

Mrs Lewis and the other fundraisers will be counting up the money raised through their walk and bucket collection this week.
