THE first film to be shot at a new world-class studio being built between Newport and Cardiff has been unveiled by Pinewood Studios.

Entitled "Take Down", the thriller will be shot in Wales and the Isle of Man, and will share in £30 million-worth of investment by Welsh Government.

Earlier this year the Argus revealed that the deal, signed between Welsh Government and Pinewood Studios, could support more than 2,000 jobs and generate an estimated £90 million spend with Welsh businesses.

The new 180,000 sq ft studio will be created at the former Energy Centre building at Wentloog Corporate Park and will form part of Pinewood’s global network of film studios.

The first movie to be shot there is aimed at a teen audience and directed by Jim Gillespie who shot "I Know What You Did Last Summer".

It follows a group of youngsters sent to a school for troubled teenagers from rich families who are then taken hostage, with the two main characters played by Jeremy Sumpter (Peter Pan, Soul Surfer) and Phoebe Tonkin (The Vampire Diaries, Bait).

It will also star Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl, J. Edgar) and rising star Dominic Sherwood (Not Fade Away, BBC’s The Cut) with Mimi Steinbauer’s Radiant Films International handling worldwide rights.

The Welsh Government’s £30 million media investment budget is available for UK qualifying film and high-end television production, through Pinewood Pictures, the studio's film and TV investment arm.

Qualifying UK productions are required to shoot half their principal photography in Wales and the Welsh Government will invest on a commercial basis.

Economy minister Edwina Hart, who led a trade visit to Los Angeles last year to raise the Welsh profile in Hollywood, said Wales has a growing reputation for film and television production and through the new fund Welsh Government will invest up to £30 million into projects brought forward by Pinewood, "to help create growth and jobs in this industry".

Steve Christian from Pinewood Pictures said this new film was "a significant milestone" which will bring "substantial economic benefits" to Wales.

The famous Pinewood and Shepperton Studios have been home to more than 1,500 films in more than 75 years, including the James Bond franchise, and Carry On series. There are over 241 independent, media related companies based at Pinewood and Shepperton’s Media hub.
