A MONMOUTH School pupil has ranked in Britain’s top 40 teenage mathematicians and strives to make the top four in the country.

Dan Smith, 16, was one of 54 boys from the independent day and boarding school who sat the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge of 25 questions for 14 to 16-year-olds. The maths whizz now is hoping to make the top four and represent Great Britain in an international competition after being invited to the UK Mathematics Trust Summer School at Oxford University.

His teacher Alistair Dawson, who entered him in the competition, said: “Twelve qualified for the next round and Dan sat the the very challenging Olympiad paper, in which he came in the top group in the UK, which is an impressive performance.

“To come in the top 40 nationally speaks for itself, I think.”

Pupils from the school won 18 gold certificates, 18 silver and 10 bronze in the Intermediate Maths Challenge, with12 boys, including Dan, qualifying for the next round.

Dan will be the first pupil from the school to attend the summer course.
