A 'PEACE' camp will be held in Newport while the Nato summit takes place in the city it has been revealed.

The camp will be set up on playing fields next to Pillgwenlly Millennium Centre.

A spokeswoman for Newport City Council said they have met Pillgwenlly community leaders to discuss the plans from the protestors to hold the peace camp there.

She added as no alternative sites were offered, partner agencies are attempting to work with the protestors to minimise the potential impact as much as possible and to prevent potential damage to this community site.

A group taking members from different agencies has met the protesters to discuss what may be provided at the camp, what restrictions will be in place, and in turn, what will be expected of those using the facility.

Subject to appropriate agreements with the camp organisers, Newport City Council will provide toilet, water, waste and cleansing supplies and services.

Dates for the camp are yet to be finalised but it is understood that it will operate from 27 August to the weekend following the summit.

Discussions regarding funding for services provided for the camp are continuing as are talks with the protestors.
