THE planning application to convert an iconic city centre hotel into luxury apartments has been lodged with the council.

The planning application, which has been submitted by Cardiff-based businessman Jahan Abedi, one of TV's Secret Millionaries, is for the 200-year-old Kings Hotel to be converted into 13 two-bedroom apartments, 14 one-bedroom apartments and three studios.

Three office units and two commercial units are also included in the plans.

The Argus reported on Mr Abedi's plans to convert the hotel into luxury apartments in June this year when he said the time is right to invest in Newport as the city can only go one way – up.

Mr Abedi is currently converting the former Shire Hall close to the city's railway station into luxury flats and plans to be part of the "positive change" happening in Newport city centre.

He previously said: "I believe that Newport has the potential of being the great city as it once was a century ago.

β€œIt was once the coal capital of the world and there is such a rich history behind it. This can be seen by the beautiful historic buildings which are dotted around the city, most of which have sadly fallen into disrepair.

β€œI believe that the property in Newport is heavily undervalued. The city has some structurally magnificent old buildings which would be great to work and live in."

Mr Abedi, an Iranian who moved to Cardiff 25 years ago, said that when he first moved to the capital it was underfunded and many areas were "derelict and rundown".

He added: "A realistic attitude from Cardiff City Council changed the city. I see Newport going the same way and there are plan for some major public and private investments in the city.

"This can only have a positive impact on the infrastructure and we would like to be part of that positive change."

The Kings Hotel closed its doors in 2012 following a severe downturn in trade.

Planning notices have gone up at the site and comments are being sought by neighbours and members of the public.

People have until September 3 to comment on the application before it is discussed by Newport City Council's planning committee.
