NEW images have been released to show the plans to develop a former factory site in Newport into housing.

Work has started on the former Pirelli cables site to transform the area into what developers are calling the city's first 'garden village'.

In February last year The Seren Group confirmed they were purchasing the land, at Telford Street, from the Welsh Government with plans for a £25 million housing development.

The factory site has been empty for more than 10 years, after closing in 2003, but computer generated pictures have now been released showing what residents can expect.

A total of 250 homes and apartments are now being built, ranging from one to four bedrooms for outright sale as well as social rents and sales under the Help to Buy scheme.

The Seren Group had first come up with the idea of a 'garden village' concept drawing on traditional arts and crafts styles of housing with green spaces last year.

Neil Ingham, from the Seren Group, said: “When we launched the garden village, the reaction of the local community and in particular the local schoolchildren who visited our exhibition was incredible.”

Pam Fitzjohn, from the sales and letting agency who are in charge of the site’s sales, said: “We’ve had interest from across South Wales and of course, lots of enquiries from people who live in Newport."
