WORK has gone on through the night to try to restore the gas supply to around 750 properties in Nantyglo interrupted late on Wednesday.

Water from a burst main in Waun Heulog, Nantyglo, got into a key Wales and West Utilities gas pipe, affecting properties in 19 streets.

“Our engineers have visited every property affected to make sure the gas supply is turned off, and are now working to remove the water from the gas pipe," said a Wales and West Utilities spokesman.

"Once this is completed we will be visiting each property again to safely turn their gas supplies back on.

"We are working round the clock to resolve this issue. This is a complex operation and we are as yet unable to let people know how long this work will take. We will keep the community informed as the work progresses throughout the day.

The streets affected are: Banna Bungalows, Bryn Awelon, Chapel Road, Cwm Crachen, Farm Road, Limestone Road, Limestone Road East, Lakeside Close, Lakeside Way, Market Road, New Road, Round House Close, Ty Heulwen, Waun Ebbw Road, Waun Ebbw Bungalows, Waun Fawr, Waun Heulog, Wesley Buildings, and Woodlands Terrace.

“We are providing vulnerable customers with alternative heating and cooking facilities if required," said the spokesman.

"If anyone needs assistance, or knows of a neighbour who may, please contact either our staff in the area, or call our customer services team on 0800 912 2999 so we can make sure that they are looked after.

"We are working closely with Tai Calon Community Housing in relation to their tenanted properties and are grateful for the support that they are providing.

“We would like to thank the community for their assistance while we work to restore gas supplies as safely and as quickly as possible.”

Tai Calon Community Housing has distributed more than 70 heaters to tenants Around half of the affected homes belong to Tai Calon, Blaenau Gwent’s largest social landlord.

Bill Pearch, its director of assets and property services, said: “We are in regular contact with the tenants and so far no one has needed to be moved from their homes.

"Those we haven’t been able to reach by phone, have been visited by us. If we still couldn’t contact them, we have left a message. We would advise anyone who is concerned about themselves, a loved one or neighbour to contact us on 0300 303 1717.”

Bron Afon Community Housing in Torfaen loaned 80 heaters, and two of the microwaves in Tai Calon’s staff canteen have also been lent to tenants.

Tai Calon is currently only carrying out emergency repairs to enable staff to be available to support tenants.
