A CWMBRAN man has been sentenced to 14 months imprisonment for an attack on his partner.

Daniel Griffiths, 29, of Plas Ty-Coch, Cwmbran, pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm to his partner of eight years.

Newport Crown Court heard from prosecutor Julian Greenwood how on April 4 this year, the defendant left his partner at home before going to the pub to drink with his friends.

His partner proceeded to lock the door, keeping the key in the lock on apprehension of the state he would be in on his return home.

“She had gone to bed when at 4.30am on April 5 the defendant returned home to find the front door had been locked,” Mr Greenwood said.

“He banged hard on the door and shouted to her (his partner) to let him in.

“She shouted back to him that she was not going to open the door.

“The defendant then broke the side panel of the door to facilitate him to reach the key and unlock it.

“He then grabbed her throat, punched her face and hit her several times on the face and arms,” he continued.

“She said the attack lasted ten to twenty minutes.”

The court heard how the defendant then fell asleep in the lounge.

A neighbour complained to the defendant about the noise caused during the attack, but the defendant did not appear to care.

His partner then showed the neighbour her injury and he reported it to the police.

The court also heard how the victim attended the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport, were she was treated for multiple cuts, fractures and bite marks to the face and neck which extended to the ears and eyes.

The defendant was then taken to Ystrad Mynach Police Station where he was arrested for assault.

David Leathley defending said that Griffiths was “deeply ashamed.”

“This is pretty bad,” he said.

“He has not instructed me to seek petty points about how awful his behaviour was.

“He does not seek to mitigate the offence.

“It is what it is.

“It is appalling and he is ashamed.”

He went on to say that Griffiths has an “alcohol problem” and said that when sober, he was a good partner.

Judge Pete Crouch QC said: “This offence is serious.

“We have a victim who was a vulnerable person.

“She was a woman and she was in a relationship with you.

“The injuries sustained were multiple including many, many abrasions and bite marks.

“You have pleaded guilty to this matter and I accept that you are remorseful.

“You realise you behaviour is unacceptable.”

He sentenced Griffiths to 14 months imprisonment and ordered him to pay a victim surcharge of £100 on his release.
