A 81-year-old man will spend his last years in prison after he was sentenced for four counts of rape and one count of indecent assault on a young girl.

Lawrence Pritchard, of Alianor Road, Caldicot, was sentenced to a total of 16 years and 6 months imprisonment at Cardiff Crown Court today.

He was found guilty by jury of the rape of a girl under 13-years-old.

Matthew Roberts, defending, told the court that Pritchard was currently suffering an illness and is at a hospital in Pentyrch with kidney problems.

He said: "He could have renal failure. He is refusing treatment and the hospital cannot force him to go to Swansea. The phrase used is that there would be massive repercussions and serious consequences if he does not receive treatment."

"This man who has a number of medical and physical problems will no doubt, I suspect spend his last days in prison."

Mr Roberts told the court there was no physical violence other than two instances which the defendant struck the victim.

Judge Daniel Williams said:"The evidence described him as a controlling, aggressive and a domineering bully. I am satisfied he was all these things.

"The defendant was and remains sexually amoral."

Judge Williams said: "The victim was dignified and courageous in dealing with her abuse. She has astonishing fortitude."

He added: "The defendant's health is failing as he is 81- years-old, there is no mitigation to be found in that."

Pritchard received 15 years imprisonment for four counts of rape, and 18 months imprisonment for indecent assault, to run consecutively.

A spokesman for Gwent Police said: “We welcome the sentencing of Lawrence Pritchard today and want to express our thanks to the victim for coming forward which takes immense courage and fortitude. We hope this sentencing provides some closure for her.

“This case shows that whether the offence is recent or historic, it’s never too late to come forward and speak to us or any of our partner agencies in confidence. The victim in this case reported her experiences as a result of reading an article in the South Wales Argus and reported it to Women's Aid. You will be listened to, supported and we will investigate.”
