A DAY care centre in Newport used by adults with learning disabilities is to be closed after a review was carried out by Newport City Council.

Ringwood House, in Dents Hill, provides day-time activities such as multi-sensory and physio sessions, hydrotherapy, cooking, music and sport.

Services will instead be delivered from a day care hub at Brynglas Adult Training Centre, in Brynglas Road from April 1, 2015.

The council review looked in to ways of "modernising" day opportunities for older residents, people with learning disabilities and people with a mental health condition.

Service users, their families, carers and staff have been involved in the review.

A Newport City Council spokeswoman said: "At the moment the day centres are not being used to capacity which means that Brynglas Adult Training Centre can accommodate the people currently using Ringwood House.

"It is proposed to close Ringwood House, which is in significant need of improvement, and make Brynglas a day care hub, initially for adults with learning disabilities. This will enable an enhanced service to be delivered, particularly for those with more complex needs.

"As part of the modernisation of the service, the council has also begun work to set up a framework for innovative, interesting and stimulating day opportunities which people can access independently, and provide a basis for re-provisioning."

Councillor Paul Cockeram, cabinet member for social care and wellbeing, said the council wants to give people with learning disabilities the opportunity to make their own choices about the types of activities they want to participate in.

He added: "The closure of Ringwood House will mean change and that can initially be difficult for some people. However, I want to ensure that we provide high quality statutory services that will improve the lives of some of the most vulnerable members of our community despite an increasingly difficult financial climate.

“We will continue to work closely with staff, the people that use the services and their carers and families, to help make any necessary transitions as smooth as possible and ensure the best possible outcomes for the individuals concerned.”
