NEWPORT pupils took part in educational workshops promoting anti-racism yesterday.

Pupils from Maindee and Lliswerry primary schools were involved in the event set up by campaign group, “Show Racism the Red Card” (SRtRC).

SRtRC is an organisation set up to tackle racism in society, particularly utilising the high profile status of footballers to promote an anti-racist message to young people.

The event, held in Rodney Parade, Newport, enabled pupils to participate in interactive activities exploring what racism is and its consequences.

Campaign worker for SRtRC, Jason Webber said: “The pupils participated in educational workshops this morning, looking at how anti-racism can be promoted through sport. They also watched our campaign DVD which features players such as Ryan Giggs addressing issues surrounding racism.”

Earlier in the day, pupils took on the role of media journalists, questioning a guest panel including former Welsh footballers Christian Roberts and Steve Jenkins, and the first black manager in the Welsh Premier League, Sean Wharton.

Zak Al-Mamun, aged 9, from Maindee Primary School, said: “I’ve learnt a lot today. I asked a question to the panel about how much racism goes on in sport, but they said it was difficult to measure exactly how much.

“What I’ve learnt from today is not to judge people by their appearance.” he said.

Mr Webber mentioned future plans for the anti-racism group.

Newport County AFC will be warming up in SRtRC t-shirts this Sunday before their game and we hope to run more pupils’ workshops with Welsh rugby players in January,” he added.

Newport County FC were expected to be represented at the event by defender Ismail Yakubu. But it is understood he was ill.
