NEWPORT schoolchildren helped to raise £100 for Age Cymru with a tea and coffee afternoon.

Pupils at Lliswerry High School organised the event for older people in the community.

Eileen Powell, executive director at Age Cymru Gwent said she was “delighted” when the charity was asked to help year eight pupil Alex Sutton and his classmates at the school to identify older people to attend the event they were organising.

She said: “It’s wonderful that these young people have raised funds and are putting on an event especially for older people in their community, we hope to help them make it a great success.”

Alex, who organised the event with Mason Probert and Gary Sutton said: “We decided to fundraise and organise this event to raise awareness of Age Concern after watching a video about the work of the charity in our PSHE lesson.

“We learnt about the good work that the charity does for the elderly in the community and wanted to do something to help.”
