A FORMER working men’s club in Abercarn has been given a new lease of life as a Church and community centre.

The Nant Pennar Working Men’s Club in West End was bought and refurbished by the New Life Christian Church, which hopes it will become the hub of the community.

The organisation held an official opening earlier this month that was attended by Islwyn MP Chris Evans, Mr Nigel Trott and children Millie and Ben Jefferies.

They were chosen to represent the church’s integration with community life, to represent supporters who have passed on or moved away and the younger generation.

Mr Evans said: “It is so encouraging to see a new church opening when so many are being forced to close, and it will truly be an asset to Abercarn”

Senior Pastor, Haydn Jefferies said: “We already have a fantastic line up of Christmas activities. When completed, we hope this building will be a hive of activity which will benefit all.”

“In 2015, we are aiming to open the community film club, coffee shop, youth work, messy church for families and cap money courses, to give people the tools to be in control of their finances. Our work has been completely staffed by volunteers. We are a small church, with a big vision and a bigger heart.”

The organisation would like to acknowledge its supporters, including Caerphilly Borough Council, Gwent Police and the Commissioners Partnership Fund.
