HOUSE in Pill where alleged drug dealing, fights and swearing took place was boarded up yesterday and its tenants evicted.

Police based in Pill closed the two-storey house on Herbert Walk after obtaining an interim order.

Crime and Disorder Reduction Officer PC Paula Spence said residents in the area told police there would be visitors constantly attending the premises throughout the day and night, sometimes hanging around in the street, fighting, shouting and swearing.

She said residents explained drugs were being dealt from the property and in the surrounding alleyways, and vehicles and mopeds would be causing a noise nuisance constantly throughout the night.

Police will seek a formal anti-social behaviour closure order from Newport Magistrates Court in January after proceedings were adjourned yesterday.

Steel shutters have been installed and the property will remain boarded up for a minimum of three months if the order is granted.

During this time anyone who attempts to go inside can be arrested.

Paula Spence, with Gwent Police, explained: “This is the result of close work with our partner agencies to tackle these issues.

Without the support and co-operation of the residents of Pill and Newport City Homes, this closure order wouldn’t be possible. I’d like to thank them for their support.”

Sergeant Jason White, from Pill Neighbourhood Policing Team, whose team oversaw the closure, said: “Residents have the right to live in a peaceful environment and we will take action to challenge anyone who upsets that.

“We will not tolerate anti- social behaviour and drugs in our community and if any residents are affected by anti- social behaviour, please let us know so that we can address it.”
