A SIXTH-FORM centre near Monmouthshire has been busy filling, wrapping and stacking shoeboxes intended to bring Christmas cheers to some of Europe’s least fortunate children.

Students and staff at Wyedean School and Sixth Form Centre prepared over 300 shoeboxes containing gifts and treats for children in Eastern Europe.

In total, 1,580 shoeboxes were collected from schools in and around Chepstow by the Rotary Club of Chepstow and District. All boxes will be loaded onto 40 ton trucks for distribution to the Czech Republic, Moldova, Romania, Belarus and Ukraine. The latter has had a particularly turbulent 2014, with 117,000 Ukrainians displaced because of ongoing unrest.

Rob Wagland, a history teacher at Wydean School, said: “It’s a great way to end the school year and demonstrates the wonderful spirit of empathy, respect and responsibility at Wyedean.”

The school also released a statement, thanking everyone who took part: “Every single student played a crucial role in this most special of days.

“And special thanks should go to Ffion Jones (Year 13) who coordinated the event so well.”
