WEARING bibs and using litter-pickers, pupils at Chepstow primary school take it in turns to keep the school grounds tidy.

Each day, pupils at The Dell give up part of their lunch break to clear the school playground and grounds of any litter.

A group of four, who are part of a weekly rota, make sure the school is free of litter.

The initiative is one of many in their efforts to work towards the school’s second Green Flag award.

Head teacher, Stephen King said: “This is just one of the ways our pupils get involved in our eco school work.”

“They take great pride in their school indoors and out and are always keen to make it look good and pick up any litter.”

“It’s a great opportunity for children to see that they can make a difference in their community.”

Mr King added: “It’s not just about picking it up. It’s just as much about getting them to be responsible for their area and respecting the environment.”

“It’s something a bit different and there has been a noticeable difference.”

“They are willing volunteers and the litter isn’t all from the school. We are near a main road and with the wind it is a constant job to keep the grounds clear.”
