A COMMUNITY hub in Abergavenny officially opened to the public at the weekend.

Around 120 people filled the Abergavenny community Centre, which is based in the former Park Street Primary School to see the Town's Mayor, Councillor Martin Hickman cut the ribbon and to watch a bilingual performance entitled; ‘Land of the Dragon/Gwlad y Ddraig by puppeteers Puppet Soup on Saturday night.

Then on Sunday the Abergavenny Community Trust, which runs the centre, held an open day offering a range of activities for all ages to give people an idea of what will be on offer in the future.

Marion Pearse, a founding member and director said the show was a complete sell-out and that the open day attracted over 250 people.

She said: “There was a continuous flow of people throughout the day all taking part in cooking, dance, craft activities, and just generally milling around talking to each other over a cuppa.”

“The eldest person there was over 90 years, and the youngest, just a few weeks old. It is the intergenerational connections and opportunities which make this centre different and unique."

Ms Pearse added: “The day was held to highlight existing skills within the community, and to let everyone get a sense of the type of people-centred organisation that is behind the centre.”

Fellow director, Paul Downs said the trust is appealing for people to join its team of Trustees and has begin applying for lottery funding.

Activities, clubs and room hire will all begin from the end of March. To get involved contact Ms Pearse on 07751 666481 or drop into the centre.
