AN ABERGAVENNY man was jailed for five years for possessing Class A drug Benzocaine.

Lewis Thomas, 26, of Main Road Gilwern, Abergavenny, was charged with one count of possessing the Class A drug, known as the most commonly used cutting agent for cocaine. He pleaded guilty to the offence.

Cardiff Crown Court heard that between May and June 2013 phone contact was established between Thomas and ‘prime mover’ Justyn Hugh who is currently serving ten years for supplying Class A drugs. Some 18 months later the defendant and Hugh became friends though their respective girlfriends.

In May 2013 the defendant was approached to provide an address to deliver a quantity of Benzocaine which was then passed on, the court was told.

The drug which is particularly used by dentists in routine practice was originally from China.

The defendant received Mkat worth 1.5oz for the delivery address, the court heard on Friday.

Defending, James Scobie said the defendant was a hard working man who had worked as a plasterer.

He said that in May 2013 Thomas was approached by Hugh for the delivery address but didn’t organise the drug to be brought in from China.

“Sometimes defendants are not particularly bright and are at the lower end of the threshold in term of education,” he said.

“He is not somebody who is very good at showing a degree of independence.

“He has always expressed his regret and remorse for being involved in this enterprise.

“He has learnt a huge lesson.”

During sentencing judge Stephen Hopkins QC said he had played a ‘significant role’ despite taking on the role as a ‘deputy’ of another gang member who was jailed for his involvement.

“You are a man with obvious good characteristics,” he said.

“You are a kind man.

“It is unfortunate for you that you came into this with your eyes wide open.”

Lewis was sentenced to five years imprisonment.
