THE finishing touches have now been made to Newport’s much-loved Festival Clock at its new home in Llanwern.

Contractors used a crane to lift the top of the structure onto its base yesterday on a roundabout near the new £1 billion Glan Llyn development.

The clock, known as “In the Nick of Time,” will tell the time but will not collapse and reveal its hidden characters as it did at its previous home in John Frost Square.

Housing developers St Modwen offered up to £10,000 for the project as a fitting entrance to their redevelopment of Newport’s Llanwern Steelworks.

The clock had been in storage for seven years after being removed from John Frost Square in 2008 to prepare to Friars Walk.

It was originally commissioned at a cost of £100,000 to represent Newport at the Ebbw Vale Garden Festival in 1992.

Newport residents welcomed the news of the clock’s return on Facebook yesterday.

Nicola Jones said: “Spent many a time watching this when my children were small - be good to see it again.”

Others offered alternative locations for the clock.

Rosalind Battle said: “I think this should belong back at the garden festival site in Ebbw Vale - brings back lots of memories.”
