ROAD closures have been announced for when the first Velothon Wales comes to Newport on Sunday, June 14.

With just under a month to go until the cycling race organisers have announced details and timings of road closures along the route.

Up to 15,000 recreational cyclists and charity fundraisers from all over the UK and Europe are riding the very same course as a number of professional cycling teams, and in order for the event to operate safely, all roads that the route follows will be closed to traffic for most of the day.

The race starts in Cardiff before travelling through Newport, Monmouthshire, Torfaen and Caerphilly, and finishes back in Cardiff city centre.

During the event the highway network from Blaenavon to Pontypool will be directly affected with full road closures, including side roads, along with the main routes into the county from Caerphilly and Monmouthshire.

Residents in the vicinity of the route should prepare for disruption on the day for around 10 hours and plan ahead for the day.

The organisers are working closely with councils to minimise disruption to local communities wherever possible and have been contacting local businesses directly.

Provision is being made for residents who receive care services in their homes and access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.

The Velothon Wales website - www.velothon-wales.co.uk - features more detail about the route and the road closures that will be in place on the day.
