A PONTYPOOL woman has spoken of her devastation after she said her 16-year-old dog was attacked by two other dogs and had to be put down.

Emma Smith was walking ‘Lucky’, a Staffordshire Terrier, up Braen Bran mountain in Cwmbran at around 7.15pm on Friday evening when she said he was attacked by another Staffordshire Bull Terrier and a Boxer dog.

The two dogs, which were not on leads at the time, dragged Lucky into a bush as he suffered three puncture wounds to the neck, including one that was 2cm deep.

Emma said at one point Lucky was “pinned down and covered in blood” as he was attacked by the two dogs.

Emma and her partner Marc, who suffered bite wounds to their hands and legs as they tried to save Lucky, took him to the vets after the attack and he was prescribed antibiotics and painkillers.

Lucky was allowed to go home, but when his condition failed to improve vets said that because of his age there wasn’t much they could do apart from pain relief.

Lucky, who Emma had owned since she was eight-years-old, was put down on Saturday afternoon.

Emma, now aged 24, has contacted the police and launched an appeal for the owners to come forward.

She is also warning other dog walkers to be careful with their own pets in the area.

“I’m trying to do everything I can to find these people,” she said.

Emma added she was “mortified” when vets told her Lucky would have to be put down.

“I cried so much I can’t cry anymore,” she said.

“He was like my baby as he had always been there.

“He always made me feel safe and now I’m on my own.”

She added: “I knew it was coming but I never thought it would happen like this.

“The last image I have got in my head is a dog dragging him into a bush.

“I never want to see that again.”

Gwent Police are investigating the case under the Dangerous Dogs Act and have released descriptions of a teenage girl and boy they would like to speak to in connection with the incident.

Chief Inspector Mick Moyles said the girl is described as approximately 16 years old, white, medium build, around 5’’7, with mid length brown hair in a pony tail with dark rimmed brown glasses. She was wearing a white vest top with navy Adidas track suit bottoms.

The boy is described as approximately 17 years old, white, slim build, around 5’’6, ash blond hair, with Bench-branded silver framed glasses. He was wearing a black tracksuit jacket and bottoms.

Neither of the dogs were on a lead.

The Boxer dog was brown with a black harness, while the Staffordshire Bull Terrier was dark brown with a white neck.

CI Moyles said: “Tragically the victim’s dog was injured and had to be put down.
