PIRATES took over Tredegar House today for its annual Pirate Day celebrations.

Tredegar House in Newport was transformed into a playground for pirates with the annual Pirate Day event on the Bank holiday weekend.

Dozens of visitors made the most of the sunny weather and turned out to the event arriving in their best buccaneer costumes.

During the day visitors met the famous pirate Captain Henry Morgan and took part in a whole host of pirate themed games and activities throughout the gardens.

Pirate Day- which has earned a reputation for being one of the best family days out in Newport- got families to join in with the best pirate costume competition, judged by renowned sea dog Captain Henry Morgan.

Children also had the opportunity to hunt through the mansion for the pirate treasure trail, have a go at plonking a pirate, and get stuck in the stocks.

“The whole team have been hard at work making bunting, perfecting their pirate lingo and getting their pirate costumes ready,” Harriet O’Brien, events and marketing assistant said.

“We love pirate day – it’s an annual highlight for us all as a team is a real Newport tradition now.

“Any excuse to get out into the gardens and take part in some silly, buccaneer fun.

“Walk the plank is definitely my favourite, though I have to admit I’m terrible at it!”
