WITH the sun glinting off their armour, the medieval jousting spectacle wowed the crowds with skill and speed at Caldicot Castle.

The Destrier Society performed a jousting tournament over the weekend with more than 1,200 people taking the opportunity to cheer as Wales took on England in the jousting event.

The knights took part in an Arming of the Knight session before the joust and people met the horses and enjoyed picnics in the sun.

The Freemen of Gwent also staged a medieval fair, where people could see the way medieval warriors lived and buy items from the stalls and enjoy a hogroast.

The manager of the castle, Mike Booth, said there has been a “good crowd” on both days with people travelling quite a distance to attend.

He said: “It’s full contact jousting so it was quite a spectacle so it really thrilled the crowds.

“It looked marvellous against the backdrop of the castle and the whole event went very well.”

He said that it was the first time that the Destrier Society had visited the castle and added that they really enjoyed it so hope to return next year.

“It’s going to be the start of another medieval festival,” he added.

The event was held as part of many across the country to commemorate the 600th anniversary of Wales' role in the Battle of Agincourt.

The Battle of Agincourt was a major English victory in the Hundred Years' War and took place on Friday, 25 October 1415 in northern France.
