UPDATE: 4.15pm

A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. 

He is currently in police custody whilst inquiries continue.

The collision took place yesterday on Sunday evening around 10.30pm on Aberdare Road, Georgetown, Merthyr Tydfil, and involved a white Seat Ibiza. 

No other vehicle was involved in the collision.

There were five men in the car, aged between 18 and 20 years old, sadly two were dead at the scene whilst a third remains in critical condition in University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

A fourth injured teenager is in Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr, suffering from minor injuries.

The two that died are Rhys Jones, aged 18, and Ryan Gibbons who was 20.  Both young men were from the Bargoed area.

South Wales Police is urging anyone who was travelling around Merthyr town centre on Sunday evening who may have seen the white Seat Ibiza prior to the collision to contact them. 

PS Gethin Hewer said: “Our thoughts are with the families of both these young men at this traumatic time. The families are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers and we are continuing the investigation to find the cause of the collision.

“We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the white Seat Ibiza travelling around the Merthyr Tydfil area prior to the collision.”

TWO young rugby fans died and a third was critically injured in a crash after watching the World Cup on TV.

The men, named locally as Ryan Gibbons, 20, and Rhys Jones, 18 from Gilfach Bargoed, died when their white Seat Ibiza hit a telegraph pole.

An 18-year-old boy in the back of the car has been left fighting for his life at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

The three had been on a night out watching the Ireland v France Rugby World Cup match on TV when tragedy struck.

The telegraph pole was sawn through by rescuers and a dozen bouquets were tied to the remaining stump on the roadside.

One floral tribute said: "You could not wish to meet two nicer young men."

A South Wales Police spokesman said they were providing support to the next of kin through family liaison officers.

The link road between's the town's retail park and the local rugby club was closed for seven hours for police to investigate the crash.
