A BACKBENCH councillor is to call on town hall chiefs to ban Chinese lanterns in Torfaen.

Colette Thomas warned that the sky lanterns could cause fire risks to agriculture and hazardous waste sites and endanger the lives of animals.

The Labour councillor for Two Locks and Henllys ward said animals could ingest the lanterns when they fall in fields and become trapped in their frames.

Cllr Thomas is the chairwoman of the learning communities overview and scrutiny committee.

She is to present her motion on the banning of lanterns at a council meeting on October 20.

Her motion calls on Torfaen council to consider banning the lanterns from any land or premises in its ownership.

The motion says Torfaen council will work with Gwent Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service to discourage the approval of licences for events that plan to release lanterns.
