GWENT Police are still appealing for a woman believed to have given birth outdoors without any medical assistance to come forward for help.

Officers released an initial appeal on October 21 following concerns that the mother and baby may be in need of urgent medical attention after the birth in the Penhow area of Newport.

Police believe the birth possibly took place in the open air, after a dog walker discovered evidence of the incident at around 10am on October 19. Medical examinations indicate that the baby is female.

Officers are working with partners in health and social services, as well as local GP surgeries and clinics, as part of their enquiries.

A police spokeswoman said at the time that the priority remains focussed on the care and wellbeing of the mother and new baby.

Police are continuing to search for the mother and baby and have reassured the woman, who is believed to have given birth sometime between October 18 and 19, that she is not in trouble and they just want to identify her and provide support if needed.

Deb Jackson, the head of midwifery at Aneurin Bevan Health Board, said it is of paramount importance that they determine the condition of both mother and baby.

Anyone with information to help trace them is asked to contact Gwent Police on 101 quoting log 126 19/10/15.
