THE Argus has once again teamed up with the King’s Church in Newport to launch a campaign helping hundreds of families across Gwent this Christmas.

The Newport church has launched its annual Jesus Cares Christmas campaign to provide food hampers and presents to families who struggle to make ends meet.

Each year the charity sends over 1,000 Christmas presents and thousands of hampers to families and this festive period they hope to do the same again this year.

Jesus Cares works with 200 partner organisations including Communities First, social services and Women’s Aid who identify families in need and provide food hampers all year round.

Faye Edwards, from the Big Lottery-funded charity, said: “At Christmas time we look to do something in addition where we give Christmas presents and we like to try and have a Christmassy theme within our hampers.”

The charity usually relies on food destined for landfill - due to reasons like discontinuation, over production or spelling mistakes on the label – but this means Jesus Cares is unlikely to receive any Christmas food items until January.

Ms Edwards said: “This is why we invite members of the public and local businesses to get involved by brining non-perishable food items which are Christmassy.”

“It’s worked really well.”

Jesus Cares is appealing for either monetary donations or non-perishable Christmas food and presents for children.
