A MONMOUTH man died after he was badly injured falling off a bike he rode down a steep hill at up to 30mph.

Lithuanian national Irmantas Giedraitis, who was 55, had drunk between 100ml and 200ml of vodka before he and a friend went on a ride around Monmouth on the evening of July 19 last year.

Mr Giedraitis, who was wearing flip flops as he rode the bike, hit his head on a wall on Staunton Road after he fell near The Mayhill Hotel.

He was not wearing a crash helmet and the bicycle was in poor condition, an inquest at Newport Coroner’s Court heard today.

He was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff but died from traumatic brain injury on July 25.

A Gwent Police road collision investigator concluded the road was in good condition at the time of the crash.

In recording a verdict a verdict of misadventure, Gwent coroner David Bowen said Mr Giedraitis should have been “nowhere near a bicycle”.
