REVAMPED GCSE History and Religious Studies programmes will not be introduced in Welsh schools until September 2017, it has been announced.

Although the schemes are being introduced in England this September, teachers in Wales are being given more time to familiarise themselves with the new structure and develop teaching plans.

The delay will also mean bilingual materials and resources can be produced in time.

Qualifications Wales chief executive Philip Blaker said: “We realise that news of this deferral will be welcomed by many, but unwelcome to some.

“It has not been an easy decision, but we believe that it is the right one, and in the best interests of learners in Wales.

“We are committed to doing all we can to support those schools adversely affected by this decision.”

Most schools will continue with the existing WJEC specification. Those using another awarding body will have to switch to the WJEC programme for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Mr Blaker also said no other new qualifications would be deferred.
