JOBS are to be lost after cuts of £140,000 over the next two years within a division of Newport City Council were agreed.

Although the council formally agreed earlier this year to make £9.1m cuts this financial year, where a number of the cuts would fall had not been fully determined.

Now cabinet member for people and business change Cllr Gail Giles has approved plans to make a £39,495 cut this year in the authority’s income collection team, which is responsible for collecting council tax and other rates as well as debts. Two staff members are set to lose their jobs, one of whom will be made redundant through the compulsory redundancy scheme. The other is taking voluntary redundancy.

Cllr Giles also approved £57,037 of cuts within the council’s internal audit staffing team over a two-year period. Although this will mean the loss of two roles, the department currently has two vacant posts, so no current staff members will lose their jobs.

Working hours within the procurement and central payments department will also be cut, with the loss of 2.4 full-time jobs, saving £46,896 over two years.
