GWENT Police are aiming to curb anti-social behaviour in Newport with a £100 fine for anyone who breaches a new public spaces protection order.

Set up in collaboration with Newport city council, the order, which came into force yesterday, will run for three years.

It includes drinking in public, persistent pleas for a charitable donation, intimidating begging, graffiti and fly-posting and failing to keep a dog on a lead.

Newport city centre inspector, Kevin Warren said: "Our key aim is to enhance the experience of visitors to Newport city centre whilst improving the feeling of safety to all visitors and residents within the Stow Hill Ward."

The order covers the following areas;

George Street, Gilligans Island, Cardiff Road, Top end of Friars Road, Top end of Stow Hill/York Place, Stow Hill top end/Caerau Road junction, Caerau Road/Junction Clytha Park Road, Clytha Park Road/Queensway near the railway station, Queensway/Old Green end, Usk Way, High Street/Skinner Street junction, Commercial Street, Comercial Street/Keynsham Avenue / Park place junction, Keynsham Avenue/Dewsland Park Road junction, Hill Street/Stow hill junction, Stow Hill/North Street junction, North street/Bailey Street junction, Blewitt Street/Clyffard Crescent junction, Clyffard Cres/Tunnel Terrace junction and Talbot Lane/School Lane junction.
