THE Gwent branch of Cats Protection is appealing for donations following a life-saving operation on a malformed cat.

Chai, who recently received a life-saving operation thanks to the charity, was one of four kittens delivered to its care several months ago.

After her first check-up, a chest abnormality was picked up that showed she had a condition called Pectus Excavatum, meaning her breast bone was curved upwards.

The procedure included breaking the sternum and bending in back into shape to form a proper ribcage.

Left untreated, Chai would would not have survive due to the lack of space in her chest cavity for her organs.

The complex surgery took place at Alphavet Veterinary Centre, in Langstone.

Cats Protection Gwent is now appealing for donations toward the kitten’s aftercare - estimated at around £2,500.

Loretta Kedward has been volunteering at the charity for around 15 years.

She said: “We are all ecstatic that Chai's operation was so successful as it was a worrying time for such a young cat to have to go through such a major procedure.

“There is no time limit for raising the £2500 but obviously the sooner the better to pay the vet bill.”

After six weeks of rest to heal and recover, Chai should go on to lead a normal life and has already been rehomed.
