A CROWDFUNDING page to help fire-damaged St David's RC Primary has been set up.

The campaign was established less than 24 hours after the reception class at the Cwmbran school suffered damage in the fire on Saturday.

Work has already started to help clear up the classroom, and parent governor Stacey Ryan launched the GoFundMe page on Sunday to help the school recover.

“I spoke to the headteacher and asked her if I could set up the GoFundMe page to help the school in any way that I could,” said Mrs Ryan.

“It is important that we are able to help the school following the fire."

The page - which has a target of £3,000 - has raised £215 so far, although the cost of the damage to the school site remains unknown at this stage.

“The £3,000 target is just an amount which I have set as a goal. But all the money received into the fund will be spent on helping the school,” Mrs Ryan added.

“All donations, regardless of size are welcome. Every little helps. This target does not represent the figure that we need, just something which we can aim for.”

Fire crews from Cwmbran, Malpas and New Inn tackled the blaze on Saturday night, and the fire was brought under control and put out by 8.55pm.

The school announced that children from reception to year six will be returning to lessons on Tuesday, although the nursery classes are postponed until further notice.

A statement read: “There will be no school for children in nursery until further notice whilst repairs to the building take place.”

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service says there will be extra security at the school until it reopens on Tuesday.

She added that a fire investigation found the blaze was started deliberately and that the cause was viewed as suspicious.

Anyone with any information on last night's fire is asked to call Gwent Police on 101 and quote log number 525 30/4/16.
