CHILDREN relished the new garden opening and belated 90th birthday celebrations for The Queen at Gaer Community Centre.

Cucumber sandwiches and cake were enjoyed by 14 parents and 10 children on Friday to celebrate The Queen’s 90th, along with welcoming the new garden.

The community centre had the garden developed earlier this month by Malpas Court Social Enterprise Group.

The group, who are under Communities First’s work programme, tidied up the garden, and fitted a sandpit and mud kitchen for the children to play in.

There were plenty of activities at the party, including crown making and seed planting for the children.

Childcare manager Sue Woodruff said the children were very excited about the party and garden opening.

“They really enjoyed the party and it was the first time they saw it [the garden] since it was done.

“It was a lovely day.”

She said the mud kitchen seems to be one the main features, and gives children a chance to explore different areas of the garden.

“It’s good to get them outside and experience everything,” she said.

“It’s made out of wood but has a water pump so they can mix soil with water and made their own mud.

“So they’re learning without realising they’re learning really.”

Gaer Community Centre have many activities for children including after school clubs and parent and toddler groups.
