They said the crash involved a Honda motorcycle and a BMW car.

Police have confirmed that the rider of a motorbike and a pedestrian were taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital with serious injuries where they are recovering.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the crash to contact Gwent Police on 101 quoting log 169 26/6/16.

Police have confirmed that the woman airlifted to hospital is from the Newport area.

They also said the motorcyclist is from Dinas Powys, and the driver of the red BMW - an 80-year-old from Newport - is assisting them with their enquiries.

GWENT Police has confirmed a woman pedestrian, air-lifted to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, was hit by the motorcycle after it collided with the BMW.

Both of the people rushed to hospital are now said to be in a stable condition.

Malpas Road is now re-open both ways after police carried out several checks.

UPDATE: 12.40pm

THE road is currently closed again in both directions while pick up trucks can remove the cars involved in the crash.

The closure is from the Bettws Lane junction to the Pillmawr Road turnoff. 

Gwent Police have confirmed that the vehicles involved were a red BMW and a motorbike.

The road closure is causing congestion at the junction with Bettws Lane.

Officers remain at the scene.

UPDATE: 9.43am

NORTH-bound on Malpas Road has been re-opened after paramedics used a helicopter to air-lift a severly-injured person to Cardiff. 

Four vehicles from the South Wales Ambulance Service attended the scene and the road remains closed south-bound from Rougemont to Malpas Roundabout.

MALPAS Road in Newport is currently closed due to a crash described by police as "serious".

The two-vehicle collision near the junction with Pillmawr Road happened at about 7.35am this morning.

Two people have been seriously injured and have been taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital and the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is being asked to call police on 101 quoting incident 169.
