NEWPORT is to get its own fanzone for Wales’ Euro 2016 quarter final clash with Belgium on Friday following a campaign by the Argus.

Although fanzones where Wales supporters can gather to cheer on the team together have been organised in Cardiff, Swansea and Caldicot for previous games, Newport has so far lacked one of its own.

On today’s front page the Argus called for the city to have its own fanzone for Friday's clash in Lille.

Argus editor Kevin Ward spoke to a number of key figures and organisations in the city over the weekend, urging them to organise an event.

And now, with Wales through the quarter finals of the competition after a stunning 1-0 victory against Northern Ireland on Saturday, this afternoon it was announced Rodney Parade, the home of Newport Gwent Dragons, Newport County AFC and Newport RFC, will host the city’s first fanzone.

The 5,000-capacity zone, organised by a partnership between Newport City Council, Newport Live and Rodney Parade, will see a giant screen set up on the grassed area outside Rodney Hall.

Gates will open at 4pm, with the game kicking off at 8pm.

Newport City Council leader Cllr Debbie Wilcox said: “I was very keen that we were able to offer a venue in the city for local fans to watch the match after it became clear that was what people wanted.

“I’m delighted we have been able to work with our leisure trust Newport Live and Rodney Parade to make sure this will happen.

“We will all be cheering on Wales on Friday night and I would like to wish the team all the best, including our Newport talent in the squad, Chris Gunter and James Collins.

“They have already done us proud to reach this far – progressing even further would be a fantastic achievement.”

Newport Live chief executive Steve Ward said he was “delighted” to be able to bring a fanzone to the city.

“Rodney Parade’s team have been fantastic in supporting event,” he said.

“As host to the Football Association of Wales National Development Centre at Newport International Sport Village we feel the connection and can’t wait to be part of the fanzone delivery.”

Rodney Parade boss Stuart Davies also said he was pleased the venue could offer fans a place to cheer on Wales.

“We’re delighted to be facilitating a Newport fan zone for such an important match, and we look forward to welcoming everyone to Rodney Parade,” he said.

“We demonstrated with last year’s fireworks display what a wonderful venue we have here, and I have no doubt that Friday will be a great occasion.

“Let’s hope for an historic Wales win and a night to be remembered by all.”

Food and drink will be available and all bars will be open.

Tickets are £3 for adults, or free for under-12s, and are available from the Newport Centre and the Riverfront Theatre, both in Kingsway, on 01633 656 757 or via newportlive.co.uk from 6pm this evening.

Fans are advised to book in advance as tickets will only be available on the gate if they do not sell out ahead of time.
