ROYAL Gwent Hospital nurses are appealing for sponsorship to organise a fundraising meal for a colleague who had a triple amputation.

Jayne Carpenter, 49, who had been working at the Royal Gwent Hospital since 1991, suffered from sepsis - a condition where the body's immune system goes into overdrive trying to fight an infection – at the end of April.

Because of sepsis, Mrs Carpenter was on a ventilator and heavily sedated for nine weeks.

She lost both legs, an arm and four fingers.

Shortly after Mrs Carpenter’s triple amputation, her colleagues started a Just Giving page, raising nearly £6,000.

Now, they want to organise a dinner and dance for her and her husband Rob at the Glen-Yr-Afon, in Usk, where Jayne got married.

Paula Plumb, who works as a nurse at the Royal Gwent Hospital's day surgery, said: “When I spoke to Jayne and Rob about the dinner and dance, they were both really excited about it.

“However, we can’t sell tickets until we have sponsors. We need them for things such as paying the deposit for the hotel.

“From nurses to doctors and friends, I don’t think we’ll have problems selling tickets for the event. Everyone will want to support it.

“We want to raise as much as possible as she’ll need lots of adaptations to be able to pick up with her life again.

“It’s our turn to do something for her, she’d have been the first one to do the same for us.”

Jayne worked in the day surgery unit when it opened in 1990 and there were only four staff. “We were such a close knit unit,” Mrs Plumb said. “Jayne is the kind of person you could not love.

“When I got the news, I was devastated. We all were.

“I’ve prayed for her so much. It’s wonderful she’s still alive and she’s such an inspiration to all of us.”
