RESIDENTS across Gwent will have the chance to emulate their Olympic sporting heroes at a host of grassroots activities hold special sessions.

‘I am Team GB’ day will be taking place across the country on Saturday, August 27 following the nation’s most successful foreign Olympics, collecting a record 67 medals.

Events will be taking place in all five boroughs of the former Gwent county area across sports where athletes returned from Brazil with gold.

From equestrian in Caldicot to cycling in Blaenavon and judo in Newport, the aim of the day is to find an athletic activity suited to anyone’s tastes.

All four of the Gwent parkruns – Newport, Cwmbran, Pontypool and Bryn Bach as well as Penallta and Barry – are involved in the day, and are hoping for increased participation in the free timed runs.

“It's basically trying to get people active no matter what their ability is,” said Fiona Cross, the Coed Eva ward councillor for Torfaen council who helped to found the parkruns in Cwmbran and Pontypool.

On Saturday, events start from 8.30am and will be going on for the most part of the day.

In Blaenau Gwent and Monmouthshire, the Bryn Bach Parkrun in Tredegar will be starting at 9am while the British Showjumping Championships will be taking place in Caldicot from 9am to 3pm,.

Visitors will be able to watch some of the country's leading amateur riders in action while learning more about the sport.

In Newport, four events are taking place with the Tredegar House parkrun taking place at 9am before swimming lessons for babies taking place in Caerleon from 9.30am to 10am.

Newport Live has organised a host of events from introductory taster judo lessons for children aged five and up, running from 9.30am to 11.30am.

Also at the Newport International Sport Village will be BMX and mountain bike riding and cricket as well as boccia – a sport derived from bowls at the Paralympics – which sessions running from 9am to 3pm.

In Torfaen, both parkruns in Cwmbran and Pontypool will be starting at 9am, while the Breeze to Blaenavon cycle ride starting in Pontypool at 12pm will take cyclists up to Blaenavon and to the Clydach Gorge.

Meanwhile in Caerphilly, sessions for tennis, fitness CrossFit classes and golf will be taking place across the borough.
