FROM lessons for beginners to high-flying stunts, Tredegar House and Newport Wetland’s 2016 Family Cycling Festival was a huge success this weekend.

The free cycling festival took place over Saturday and Sunday, with a family day on Saturday and an adventure day on Sunday.

Around 1,500 people attended the event and across the weekend at both venues and was ran by Tredegar House, Sustrans Cymru and the RSPB.

On offer to families on the Saturday was a bicycle training workshop for eight to 12-year-olds by Changing Gearz, a project which aims to train young people in bike maintenance and repair and cycle training.

And on Sunday, Sustrans Cymru hosted two bike rides starting at Tredegar House which showcased traffic-free cycle routes of the National Cycle Network and was open to beginning and intermediate riders aged 12 and over.

Families could choose from the Explorer Ride which travelled from Tredegar House to Newport Wetlands via the Transporter Bridge, or the Discovery Ride, starting from the house and travelling to the National Roman Legion Museum in Caerleon.

The weekend also saw freestyle mountain bike stunt show performances, pedal powered paint spinning, a bicycle bubbles and disco party and rides to Newport Wetlands.

Community engagement officer for the National Trust at Tredegar House, Phil Wilson, said: “We ran the event with the RSPB Wetlands and Sustrans. It’s the first year and it’s gone really well.

“It’s a family and children friendly event so there was something for everyone over the weekend.

“Newport has really good cycling routes so it was good to introduce them to people who maybe hadn’t used them before.

“It was great to hold it at Tredegar House as well, as it’s a nice environment with a nice feel to it and the routes fit well with the visitors, so it’s great for us and for them too.”
