HUNDREDS of sports fans turned out to support an appeal to help a Cwmbran teenager to talk.

The GoFundMe page ‘Help Megan Talk’ was set up by the family of Megan Martin, 19, of Coed Eva who was born with cerebral palsy and epilepsy, which affect her ability to communicate.

After raising around £1,465 in five days, the appeal has now shot to £2,904 through the support of family, friends and local businesses.

Sister Kylie and brother Ryan came up with the idea to help Megan and hope the fundraising will support her with further language therapy sessions.

Due to Ryan’s connection with the local gym Goode’s Fitness, the Cwmbran business pledged to help the family’s cause by hosting a ‘Fight for Megan’ boxing night on Saturday, September 24.

Although the gym is still counting the overall funds raised on the night around 400 people attended to support Megan and watch the boxing bouts.

Sister Kylie Martin said: “We’re overwhelmed with the support and we’re still searching now for the best possible speech therapy and therapists.

“We didn’t realise people would react so amazingly and so many people have given up their time to help us.

“We would like to thank everyone for that night, especially Rob and Jayne Goode. It couldn’t have gone any better and was amazing.”

She added: “Megan even attended from 5pm – 9pm and loved every second of it, with everyone approaching her and wishing us all well. It was such a good atmosphere.”

Jayne Goode, of Goodes Gym, described the atmosphere as “electric” on the night and said that it was third boxing event the gym had hosted for charity.

Speaking about Megan, she said: “Megan touches everybody’s heart by the way she is always smiling and she is such a beautiful young lady.

“Her family have also touched a lot of people through Facebook and their advertising by the way they are with Megan all the way.

“To get her to communicate — even if it its only a few words — would be absolutely amazing”.

Based on the success of the first event, the gym will host another charity white collar boxing match on Saturday, December 10.
