THE inquest into the death of a Chepstow mother, who was previously married to footballer Mark Aizlewood, heard she had suffered with depression for years.

Penelope Aizlewood, aged 54, who died on June 19, this year, was separated from her husband, the former Wales and Newport County player.

Gwent Coroner's Court sitting in Newport on Thursday heard the couple had been separated for three years and were in the process of getting a divorce.

The court heard evidence from her daughter Holly Extance that her mother suffered with depression for a number of years. Ms Extance said she lost her baby in childbirth in March and this had a "profound effect" on her mother.

The court heard Mrs Aizlewood, who worked in an estate agents, was interviewed by police on three occasions as a potential witness in an investigation.

On June 19, Mrs Aizlewood, was found unresponsive by one of her daughters in her bedroom at their home in Chepstow.

A post-mortem examination concluded her cause of death was as a result of a combined toxicity of alcohol and anti-depressants. Coroner Wendy James returned a verdict of suicide.
