A LOCAL group is aiming to secure £25,000 of funding for a children’s minibus.

Thomas Carroll, the Caerphilly based insurance broker, has entered the 2017 Aviva Community Fund on behalf of Islwyn Special Resource Base (SRB).

The company are aiming to secure £25,000 of funding so the unit’s children can have an accessible minibus of their own.

Islwyn SRB is a special learning unit at Islwyn High School in Blackwood that facilitates students in secondary education with specific learning and care requirements.

The base shares facilities with Islwyn High School and currently relies on borrowing the main school minibus when it is not in use to arrange ‘life lesson’ outings and personal development activities.

With only two weeks left to vote, Thomas Carroll and SRB are rallying voters across South Wales to support the initiative.

Gareth Cotty, director at Thomas Carroll, said: “Our son Harvey has attended Islwyn Special Resource Base for a little over 12 months following his move to comprehensive school. Harvey has a range of complex physical and learning difficulties and autism. As a family, we rely on the school to support us not only in Harvey’s academic development but more importantly, his life skills and experiences.

“The ability to get out and about is extremely important to the children. The local community play a huge role in accepting and supporting Harvey and his friends.”
