IT WAS a terrible start to this year for Coed Eva Primary School which suffered awful damage in a fire.

The blaze, which broke out in the early hours of New Year’s Day, gutted the infants and nursery school.

Ten fire crews fought for hours to prevent the fire spreading to the adjoining juniors’ building.

And thanks to those efforts, most children were able to return to school after the Christmas break with only the nursery children having to wait for temporary classrooms to be installed.

The remarkable thing throughout it all was the determination of head teacher Gill Ellis for things to get back to normal as quickly as possible. What was also notable was the incredible support from the community to get the school back on its feet.

The one crying shame though is that nobody has yet been brought to justice for this arson attack.

Yesterday police revealed that the last person arrested and bailed in the wake of the fire has been released without any further action.

This is no doubt as galling for the police as it is for everyone else but our concern is that the further away we get from the actual incident the harder it may well be to find those responsible.
