A NEWPORT school boy who is battling leukaemia cried with happiness when he received a special award for bravery.

Eight-year-old Lucas Hoare was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) – the most common type of leukaemia to affect children – in March this year.

Now, for the courage he has shown throughout his treatment, he has received a Star Award from Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens, in partnership with TK Maxx.

Lucas’ mum Lindsay Hoare nominated her son for the award.

She said: “As soon as I heard about the awards I put Lucas forward. Through all the horrific obstacles he’s faced, he's never stopped smiling.

“We still have another two-and-a-half years of treatment to endure but Lucas is so strong and courageous. He reassures his sister every time we visit the hospital that he will come back as happy as when he left. He truly is a little star in the making.

“We’re so grateful for the treatment that he’s having. Research is vital to help more people like Lucas.”

Proudly displayed on the family’s mantelpiece at their home in Bettws, Lucas was “over the moon” with his star award.

“I couldn’t believe it when it came through the post,” said Lucas.

“I burst into tears. It has made me feel really good and it’s one of the best things that has happened to me.”

Mrs Hoare and her husband, Luke, waited anxiously for four days to be told the devastating news that their oldest son had ALL.

She said: “Our world fell apart and I couldn’t register what the doctor was telling us. I can’t remember much about the days that followed. I felt like I was in a cloud.”

Lucas spent the following three weeks in hospital after he was diagnosed and started treatment immediately. He needed a wheelchair after having chemotherapy which also caused his hair to fall out.

However, the Monnow Primary School pupil is now feeling much better, and has daily chemotherapy at home, as well as regular steroid treatment.

He is also taking part in the cancer trial ‘UKALL 2011’ and will be receiving maintenance therapy until he’s almost 11.
